Detroit Auto Show 30
Cars are always present in people’s daily lives since they were first invented in the 1880s. Back then, cars were expensive luxuries that only rich people could afford. It was the year 1908 when cars were first made affordable by Henry Ford. This move led to the distribution of vehicles to the general public. This move also popularized vehicles because of their usefulness and performance. Today, vehicles are popular because they are considered as embodiments of a person’s wealth. Many car manufacturers use this premise to make more luxurious vehicles that bring something new to the table every year. They are annually highlighted at the grandest stage of vehicle exhibition known as the Detroit Auto Show. In this article, we will talk about the 2014 Detroit Auto Show including new vehicles, news, and the show’s highlights.
The 2014 Detroit Auto Show was held from January 13 until January 26. During these days, numerous events took place at the location with the first five days reserved for different previews and the remaining 9 days open to the public. There are a total of 35 car introductions in the entire event. The introductions are categorized as concept car, production car, and race car. The production car category consisted of 21 vehicles that received different improvements that enhanced their looks, performance, and design. The concept car category consisted of 12 vehicles that define the current engineering marvels of their respective brands. The vehicles under this category are arguably the most awaited vehicles in the entire show. The race car category only consisted of 2 vehicles but nevertheless impressed attendees because of the sheer and raw power that the vehicles possessed.
The main event of the entire vehicle exhibition is the awarding ceremony. The awards for the event include “Car of the Year”, “Truck of the Year”, “Best Production Vehicle”, “Best Concept Vehicle”, and “Best Use of Colours, Graphics, and Materials”. The winner for the Car of the Year award is the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray while the Truck of the Year award went to the Chevrolet Silverado. The 2015 Ford Mustang received the Best Production Vehicle award while the Volvo Concept XC Coupe won both the Best Concept Vehicle award and the Best Use of Colours, Graphics, and Materials award.
The highlight of the 2014 Detroit Auto Show is the unveiling and introduction of vehicles to the public. Generally, this is the most awaited portion of the event because of the hype the vehicles got as well as the numerous teasers that companies release prior to the event. In this year’s Auto Show, the 2015 Corvette Z06 is considered as having the best highlight because it combines a powerful engine with a swift and dexterous body.
Another highlight of the event is the unveiling and introduction of Kia’s GT4 Stinger concept and Toyota’s FT-1 concept. Both of these vehicles are classified as sports cars, meaning their design and performance generally appeal to the public. These two vehicles are also surprise entrants to the event since Kia and Toyota released trailers for their respective vehicles only within months of the Auto Show. Aside from these vehicles, other concept cars that generated tremendous hype include the North American debut of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Concept, the Volvo Concept XC Coupe, the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rogue concept, and the Acura TLX Prototype.
Concept cars aside, the Detroit Auto Show also focused its spotlight on production vehicles, especially on the 2015 Ford Mustang, the 2015 Lexus RCF, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, the 2015 Porsche 911 Targa, and the 2015 Subaru WRX STI. These vehicles received either a facelift or a performance overhaul resulting to their presence in the Auto Show. There is also a highlight on vehicular technology introduced by Audi and Nissan. Audi introduced their all road shooting brake, while Nissan introduced their IDx Free flow system and IDx NISMO debut for the United States market. It is expected that these technologies would be added to the vehicles of their respected brands within this year.
Even though the vehicles in the event are categorized as production, concept, and race, it is better to list these vehicles according to their brands since it would help determine what brands have stepped up a notch in this year’s Auto Show. Audi introduced their 2015 models – the Audi A8 and Audi Q3. Both of these vehicles had facelifts and are set for a United States release this year. BMW introduced their 2014 model for the BMW 2 Series and 2015 models for the BMW M3 and BMW M4. Cadillac also makes an appearance in the show via their release of the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe.
Chevrolet, on the other hand made their mark on the show with the introduction of the all-new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, its variant – the C7 R, and the 2015 Camaro. Of all the vehicles in the event, the Corvette Stingray is easily the best because of its massive horsepower and elegant design. Chrysler and GMC also made an appearance in the event with the Chrysler 200 and GMC Canyon respectively. Ford introduced the 2015 Ford F-150 and their very popular Ford Mustang. The 2015 Ford Mustang received a major facelift and has been on the receiving end of paparazzi photos ever since Ford announced that the Mustang will have a new design. Honda and Hyundai introduced their Fit and Genesis, respectively, while Kia and Infiniti released their Q50 and GT4 Stinger concept vehicles, respectively.

Both of these vehicles received design and performance upgrades. Volkswagen introduced several cars, namely the 2015 Golf R, the Beetle Dune, and the Passat BlueMotion Concept. Near the end of the list is Acura’s TLX and TLX GT followed by the Mini John Cooper Works Concept. The last 3 vehicles on this list are Nissan’s Sports Sedan Concept, the Toyota FT-1, and the Volvo Concept XC Coupe.

This year’s Detroit Auto Show has been a magic fair for Mercedes-Benz as the German automaker unveiled not one but three new rides so far. After a series of leaks and rumors, full details about the 2014 E63 AMG sedan and estate models have been presented by Mercedes.
The revamped E63 AMG comes with a considerably more aggressive front fascia that features new headlamps, a revised grille and bumper with large air ducts and a central splitter aimed to improve air flow underneath the vehicle. Seen from the back, the vehicle showcases a restyled rear bumper, an updated diffuser and quad trapezoidal tailpipes.
Under the bonnet, the new E 63 AMG packs the same 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine but this time AMG has modified it to produce 557 HP – 410 kW at 5,500 rpm and 720 Nm (531 lb-ft) of torque. All this power enables the high-performance sedan to sprint from 0 to 100km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds.
Mercedes-Benz has also introduced the new 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system, respectively the E63 AMG 4MATIC S-Model as it is referred to. Available on both body styles with a rear differential lock, the new model features a more powerful variant of the same engine with 585 HP – 430 kW at 5,500 rpm and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque at the pedal.
The new all-wheel drive 4MATIC variant can do the 0 to 100km/h sprint in 3.7 seconds for the sedan and 3.8 seconds for the wagon and regardless of the version, all models have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
Power is sent to wheels via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT seven-speed sports transmission which offers four modes: C (Controlled Efficiency), S (Sport), S+ (Sport Plus) and M (Manual). Furthermore, a ceramic brake system is optionally available and comes with ventilated and perforated 360mm brake discs with silver calipers for the regular AMG model and red ones for the higher-spec S-Model.
Notably, the S-Model bears some minor differences from the normal version, like the 19-inch, 10-spoke alloys with 255/35 R19 and 285/30 R 19 tires (front / rear), the silver chrome finish for the front splitter and rear trim strip and a body-colored spoiler lip for the sedan version.

Volkswagen has decided to unveil the Passat Performance Concept ahead of next week’s Detroit Motor Show. What’s so special about it? Well, this production-ready concept boasts a 4-cylinder, 1.8-liter turbocharged engine, from the EA888 family, which generates around 250 HP – 186 kW.
Even though it’s already available in Europe and Asia, this TSI power unit is set to replace the 2.5-liter inline-5 engine currently available in the United States. Notably, the performance concept comes connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
On the exterior side, the vehicle looks slightly more aggressive with new taillights, a revised front bumper with honeycomb inserts, a lowered suspension and a brand new set of 19-inch wheels. Seen from the back, the ride features dual exhaust pipes and a discreet boot-lid spoiler. All in all, this vehicle could very well turn out to be a preview of a future R-Line model so further news are to be expected after the Detroit Auto Show presentation.
Volkswagen says that the interior of the cabin features two-tone leather upholstery, carbon-like inserts on the dashboard and a black headliner.
After announcing the brand new E 63 AMG for the Detroit Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz has also revealed some details about the 2014 CLS 63 AMG and Shooting Brake which will also make their debut next week.
What’s so special about the new CLS is that it packs an improved V8 5.5-liter bi-turbo that is now capable of producing 557 HP – 410 kW at 5,500 rpm and 720 Nm of torque. Further, the four-door coupe sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds while the heavier Shooting Brake needs an extra 0.1 seconds.
The updated CLS lineup will also be available with the new 4MATIC system which lifts the output to 585 HP 430 kW at 5,500 rpm and 800 Nm between 1,750 and 5,000 rpm. The 4MATIC S-Model, as it is also known, sprints to 100km/h (62 mph) in 3.6 seconds and 3.7 seconds for the Shooting Brake version. If you’re wondering, all models have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
The seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT transmission is offered with four modes: Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S), Sport Plus (S+) and Manual (M). The S-Model is fitted with a rear-axle differential lock and comes with red painted calipers, while on the inside there’s a black Nappa leather steering wheel, a revised AMG instrument cluster and grey contrasting stitching.
The rear-wheel drive model is expected to reach the dealer shops in April, while the all-wheel drive version and the S-Model will do so in June.

Mercedes-Benz is locked and loaded for next week’s Detroit Auto Show. As you may already know, the German automaker has recently prepared the facelifted versions of the E-Class sedan, wagon, coupe and cabrio. However, what you might not know is that a new kid has just made reservations for the party. The E63 AMG performance sedan has just been confirmed to debut at the Detroit Auto Show.
Pictured in this “family portrait”, the new E63 packs the same design features as the standard E-Class sedan, but with a more muscular body kit. From what we can see in this official picture, the vehicle received a sportier front bumper with a bigger air intake that stretches from ear to ear, bigger wheels, and revised side skirts.
There’s no word about what’s trapped under the bonnet, but surely, the new E-class AMG will be available for the first time with an improved version of the 4Matic all-wheel drive system. This feature was AMG’s weak spot in the race against Audi’s Quattro and BMW’s x-drive, so the upgrade represents a logical step forward for AMG.
Audi has officially announced its intentions to showcase both the RS5 Cabriolet and R8 facelift versions at the Detroit Auto Show. Slated to make their public debut for the North American Continent, both vehicles pack some extraordinary features that will surely make the delight of many customers.
First up, the 2014 R8 features subtle-modified design with new LED headlights, a hexagonal grille and restyled side mirrors. Under the bonnet, the base model has a 4.2-liter FSI V8 engine that generates 430 HP – 316 kW and 430 Nm of torque. All this power goes to the wheels via a new seven-speed S tronic transmission that helps the vehicle do the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 4.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 299 km/h (186 mph).
The R8 V10 packs a 5.2-liter FSI V10 engine that outputs 525 HP – 386 kW and 530 Nm of torque. It enables the model to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds, before topping out at 314 km/h (195 mph).
Lastly, the R8 V10 Plus has the same 5.2-liter FSI V10 engine but only this time, the power mill produces 550 HP – 404 kW and 540 Nm of torque. Thanks to the extra power and additional lightweight components, the model runs from 0 to 100km/h (62 mph) in 3.3 seconds and has a top speed of 315 km/h (196 mph).
Moving on, the RS5 Cabriolet has a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter FSI V8 engine that produces 450 HP – 331 kW and 430 Nm of torque. It enables the 2,005 kg (4,420 lbs) cabriolet to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph).
Notably, both models will hit the US dealershops this spring.

The electric car hype is slowly taking over the world and Cadillac is not falling behind. For the past two years, Cadillac has been developing its own version of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid and the closest indication was previewed by the 2009 Converj Concept (pictured here).
Recently, Cadillac released some news about an upcoming hybrid vehicle that will be unveiled at the upcoming Detroit show. As a reminder, the Converj was a coupe that not only incorporated GM’s advanced plug-in hybrid technologies but also all of the traits that make a proper Cadillac. Notably, the future electric vehicle will ditch the Converj name and go for the ELR once it reaches production.
With the 2013 Detroit Auto Show right around the corner, Cadillac has just released these teaser images of its new luxury coupe. Although it’s just a simple silhouette shot, it’s quite clear it’ll look very similar to that earlier concept, which is certainly not a bad thing, gorgeous as it was. Details are still being kept under wraps at the moment, but we can expect to find a more luxurious interior over the Volt’s as well as sportier handling and a higher price tag. More details will come in just a few weeks from Detroit.

Earlier this week BMW released a couple of pictures of its brand new 4 Series Coupe Concept, and now, they’ve released full info about the upcoming vehicle. Set to debut at the Detroit Auto Show next month, the concept showcases the new coupe version of the 3 Series, which has now been spun off as its own model line.
The Bavarian automaker successfully morphed the 3-series into a fresh new vehicle that differentiates itself from its origins just like the 6-series is distinct from the 5. The new ride is longer, wider and squatter than the 3 Series coupe it replaces and it also comes equipped with a few interesting new features like the mirrors, door handles and headlights.
As usual, BMW went mute on the engines prepared for the production version, but we can expect the same 2.0-liter four and 3.0-liter six (both turbocharged) to carry over from the 3-series. More details may surface after the official unveiling of the ride in Detroit next month. The vehicle looks awesome but along the path to production, the 4 Series might end up loosing some of the details featured on the concept.
