Volkswagen will stop producing the Kombi from 2013
Bad news for all you Kombi lovers out there. Volkswagen has decided to stop making the famous wagon after almost 63 years of continuous production. Also known as the T2 in Brazil, the Kombi is currently being produced only in this country.
The reason behind this decision is a new safety legislation that will be implemented in 2014. It states that all cars sold in Brazil must come with an ABS system and have driver and passenger airbags, and the Kombi is far from having any of these options. Volkswagen of Brazil product development chief stated that in order to meet these requirements the Kombi needs to become “a new car” and from the looks of it, Volkswagen has no plans in that direction.
Currently, the nine-seater wagon is being built at Volkswagen’s Anchieta plant located in Sao Paulo. Starting from December 31, 2013 the Kombi will no longer be produced thus ending the 63-year run of the vehicle that was introduced back in 1950.
